How to Install Power BI

Power BI

Power BI is a visualization software from Microsoft that is extremely useful in efficiently creating interactive dashboards and significantly reducing repetitive work. Power BI is divided into three versions: Power BI Desktop, Power BI Web, and Power Mobile. Today, we will discuss how to install Power BI Desktop as it is the main version with the most comprehensive features for creating dashboards and publishing them to Power BI Web.

Installing Power BI

There are two ways to install Power BI: download the .exe file from Microsoft’s website and download it directly from the Microsoft Store.
Both methods install the same version of Power BI and offer the same functionality. However, downloading directly from the Microsoft Store provides automatic updates, so you don’t need to worry about whether your software is the latest version or not.

Power BI from Microsoft Store

To start, go to the Microsoft Store, which is installed on Windows 10 and Windows 11, and search for Power BI.

Click on Power BI as shown above and click Install.

Power BI .exe

You can search for Power BI on Google and click the first link from Microsoft, or click here.

On that page, you can select your language and click Download. The Power BI that appears will have two versions: a regular 32-bit version and an x64 version.

Power BI comes in two versions: x32 = 32 bit and x64 = 64 bit. The “bit” refers to your computer’s system. Most systems today are 64 bit, so it is recommended to choose this version and click download.

Once the download is complete, you will get the PBIDesktopSetup_x64.exe file, and you can proceed with the installation.

Which method is better?

Although both versions can install Power BI and function identically, having both versions installed can sometimes lead to redundancy and confusion. When installing via the .exe file, users need to update the program themselves manually. Therefore, we recommend installing through the Microsoft Store as the primary method. This way, the program can automatically update, eliminating concerns about the version of Power BI.

Minimum requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 or later.
  • .NET 4.7.2 or later.
  • Microsoft Edge browser (Internet Explorer is no longer supported)
  • Memory (RAM): At least 2 GB available, 4 GB or more recommended.
  • Display: At least 1440×900 or 1600×900 (16:9) required. Lower resolutions such as 1024×768 or 1280×800 aren’t supported because some controls (such as closing the startup screens) display beyond those resolutions.
  • Windows display settings: If you set your display to change the size of text, apps, and other items to more than 100%, you won’t see some dialogs that you must interact with to continue using Power BI Desktop. If you encounter this issue, check your display settings in Windows by going to Settings > System > Display, and use the slider to return display settings to 100%.
  • CPU: 1 gigahertz (GHz) 64-bit (x64) processor or better recommended.
  • WebView2: If WebView2 wasn’t automatically installed with Power BI Desktop or if it was uninstalled,

Limitations of Power BI

For users working on MacOS, you cannot install Power BI directly. You will need to have a virtual machine program, such as Parallels, to emulate the installation of Windows 10/11 on your device in order to use Power BI.
